Improving memory in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy

Professor Liam Gray and colleagues at Cardiff University are looking at the effectiveness of an existing treatment, fluoxetine, on learning and memory problems in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE).

Learning and memory problems are common effects of mTLE, but there are currently no effective treatments for them. If fluoxetine is shown to have a significant beneficial impact on these problems it could have enormous implications in improving the quality of life for people with mTLE, and as fluoxetine is already licensed it could potentially be approved for mTLE treatment in as little as 12 months.
