Research into epilepsy has experienced significant delays due to the pandemic. Epilepsy Research UK has therefore decided to focus this year’s grant round on funding research that is ready to go, right now! We want to fast track innovations into the causes, diagnosis and treatments of epilepsy and continue to capacity-build the epilepsy research environment.
This year, we are therefore seeking applications for Endeavour Project Grants and an Emerging Leader Fellowship Award. Continuing our commitment to work with, and learn from, organisations specialising in neurology and neurological conditions, we are delighted to announce that in addition, we will be collaborating with the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) to co-fund a Clinical Research Training Fellowship.
What will these awards focus on?
Endeavour Project Grants investigate a research question based on existing pilot data, with the aim of substantially contributing to furthering knowledge of epilepsy. The Emerging Leader Fellowship Award supports early career researchers planning to develop a track record in epilepsy research and seeking to transition into research leadership.
Our co-funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship, in collaboration with the Association of British Neurologists (ABN), encourages the brightest UK neurology trainees to carry out world-leading clinical neuroscience research to improve the care of people with epilepsy. The ABN, as the membership body for neurologists in the UK, aims to promote excellent standards of care and champion high-quality education and world-class neurological research. Research in clinical neuroscience lags far behind research funding for other conditions and in the recruitment and retention of researchers. It is therefore vital that the next generation of neurologists is trained in research and discovery.
Patient and public involvement – SHAPE NETWORK
This year people with lived experience of epilepsy will play a key role in supporting our grant round through the SHAPE NETWORK. To date, we have recruited nearly 300 members to the network, which will provide a national Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) service for researchers, facilitating and managing the involvement of people living with epilepsy in research. Through the SHAPE NETWORK, we will provide researchers with focus groups to assist with study design, steering committees for research programmes, communication accessibility reviewing, and recruitment for research studies.
