Psssst… there aren’t too many things to celebrate at the moment, so we thought we’d share the story of teams from the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle University who, despite many setbacks, went the extra mile (literally) for ERUK..

The teams had been due to take part in the Great North Run but like so many events, the coronavirus forced the cancellation of the 2020 race. Headed up by Consultant Neurologist and ERUK Trustee Dr Rhys Thomas, the teams didn’t let lockdown get them down and instead decided to stage their own event!

Dr Thomas said, “The Great North Run usually starts in the shadow of where our teams work at Newcastle University and the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Following its cancellation this year, we decided to launch our own event – the ‘Slight North Run’. As well as raising funds, we wanted to raise awareness that the North East has the highest rate of epilepsy in England. But epilepsy is more than just seizures, and life changing, life saving research is chronically underfunded and desperately needed.”

And it would seem their talents extend to video production – they’ve also put together this brilliant video of the day. It’s worth a watch!

We would just like to say a huge thank you to all those that put in the time and energy to train and fundraise for this special event. Even when further lockdown restrictions were imposed in the North East last week, the teams reacted swiftly and adapted the race to be a virtual event to ensure everyone’s safety. We are proud to share that the teams smashed their target of running 150 miles, reaching over 350 miles in total!

We would also like to thank everyone that sponsored the team – we spotted some of our regular supporters donating too from as far and wide as Essex to the USA!  Of course, there is still time to donate by visiting the  ‘Slight North Run’ JustGiving page.

If you have been inspired by the efforts of Dr Thomas and his colleagues, please do get in touch with Mehreen, our Head of Development and Events, and she would be happy to help you put together a ‘Slight North Run’ of your very own.
